Who are we?
The North Alabama British Motoring Society is club
of British car enthusiasts founded by Steve Floyd and George Cagle in
1985 after a chance meeting while both were out in their vintage British
sports cars. Steve and George
each realized the need for local British car enthusiasts to get together
and support each other and NABMS was born.
Since then, the club has grown steadily and now boasts over 80
members in the Northern Alabama and
southern Middle Tennessee area.
While founded as a club of British car enthusiasts, NABMS is open
to enthusiasts of all European cars.
Currently most members own or lust after some sort of MG,
Triumph, Austin-Healey, Mini, or Jaguar.
However, many club members also appreciate and own cars from
Germany, Sweden, France,
Yugoslavia, and Italy as well,
as evidenced by the variety of other European marques owned by club
members. Membership in the club is open to anyone.
Enthusiasm for British and European cars, not ownership, is the
only requirement!

What is the
purpose of the club?
NABMS, as mentioned above, was
originally founded to serve as support for owners of British cars in the
Northern Alabama/southern Middle Tennessee area.
Support of members includes, but is not limited to, unlimited
access to the wealth of club member knowledge and experience, use of
club-owned specialty tools and regalia, planning of fun driving events,
and the general camaraderie that comes from folks from all sorts of
backgrounds sharing the same rewarding experience (British car
ownership). Due to the
relative paucity of enthusiast clubs in the area supporting European car
owners and enthusiasts in general, NABMS wholeheartedly welcomes German,
Italian, Swedish, and French enthusiasts in the club as full members as
well! So, even if your
tastes lean more toward Euro, or even Yugoslavian or Russian, you’ll
find enthusiastic support in NABMS!

What does NABMS
actually do?
In addition to the monthly club meetings, NABMS has
several scheduled events every year.
The biggest events are our two annual car shows, the EuroBrit
Auto & Bike Expo held in early June, and the Father’s Day Show, held
over Father’s Day weekend inside the Colonial Mall in Decatur, AL.
In addition to these annual events, NABMS members get together
frequently for driving events, tech sessions, summer time monthly
cruise-ins, and a yearly Christmas party where members each make a Toys
for Tots donation. NABMS is
always up for something fun to do!
Any kind of event a member wants to plan, organize, or host,
whether it’s some sort of get-together, drive, or competitive event, is
always well attended by the club in general and serves to get the cars
out where they can be thoroughly enjoyed and seen in action by the
general public, which is always good for the hobby.
Some of the more active NABMS club members participate in the
events of other local clubs, namely the North Alabama Volkswagen Club
(NAVWC, http://www.navwc.org/ ), the
local chapter of the Ferrari club, the local Alfa Romeo club, and the
local chapter of the SCCA, the TVR-SCCA, whose premier event is the Crow
Mountain Hill Climb, an SCCA-sanctioned hill climb competition held on
the last weekend in September.
Additionally, many NABMS members are enthusiastic participants in
the events organized by other regional British car clubs, namely the the
Northwest Alabama British Sports Car and Motoring Club, headquartered in
Florence, AL (http://www.shoalsbritishcars.org/
), the Birmingham British Motoring Club, in Birmingham (
http://www.birminghambmc.org/
), the Nashville British Car Club,
the Music City Jaguar Club, and the Southern British Car Club of
Greater Chattanooga.

When/Where
does the club meet?
The club holds monthly meetings at the
Old Greenbrier BBQ restaurant on the first Tuesday of every month
(except January, which is the second Tuesday, due to the holidays).
On any given month, but especially in the summer, the
Greenbrier’s parking lot is a veritable mini British car show, and when
the weather is nice, most club members hang out in the parking lot
“kicking the tyres” before going in to join the “official meeting.”
We typically hold a late summer meeting at the Gazebo in downtown
Madison.
A yearly S.U carburetor seminar is put on for the November
meeting, at which time club officers are elected.

Is the
club a chapter of any national enthusiast clubs?
Yes!
NABMS is a proud chapter of the North American MGB Register
(NAMGBR), which provides national support for owners of MGBs, MG
Midgets, and MG 1100/1300s.
Additionally, we serve as a Vintage Triumph Register chapter, the only
VTR chapter in Alabama!
NABMS is also a chapter of the Jaguar Club of North America
(JCNA), and claim several active members of the North American Spitfire
Squadron (NASS)! Through
these chapterships, NABMS is able to offer additional support to owners
of these marques. NABMS also
receives benefits from these national associations as well!

Who can join
NABMS (and how)?
Anyone who wants!
There are no requirements for membership, although enthusiasm for
British or European cars or motorcycles definitely helps!
Membership dues are $15/year, which goes toward the cost of
organizing events, an occasional newsletter, and miscellaneous club
expenses. While its nice to
be a “card-carrying” member, non-members are invited and encouraged to
participate in all NABMS events and meetings.
Joining NABMS is simple!
Just fill out the attached membership form and send it in.
Or, better yet, bring it with you to a meeting or other club
event and give it to a club officer.
That way you can get to know club officers and members at the
same time! Membership forms
can also be found on our club website along with the officer addresses.
